Peter Bhatti, Chairman International Christian Voice said that the August 11 celebration of Minority Day reminds us of the vision of our founding father, Quid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, to have a free and equal state, regardless of caste, creed or religion.
Minority Day also reminds us of the contribution of Christians and other religious minorities of Pakistan. Mr Bhatti commended the significant services of religious minorities in the history of the creation of Pakistan. He lauded the vital contributions of religious minorities in the areas of
health, education, defence, and social welfare. Mr.Bhatti said that unfortunately, after the death of the founding father, every other ruler used religion for their vested interests and to prolong their rule. Laws discriminating against the religious minorities started being introduced. Blasphemy laws, Hudood ordinances, laws of evidence, and other discriminatory laws are not only against the minorities but also go against the vision of the founding father Qauid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. These laws encouraged extremists and forces of violence to instill fear into the religious minorities and to make them feel insecure in their homeland. People have widely misused these discriminatory laws and have set villages on fire where people have been burned alive and properties severely damaged.Giving tribute to Martyr Shahbaz Bhatti, he said that we have lost a great leader who dedicated his life to bring democracy, unity, equality, peace and welfare to Pakistan. He dedicated his entire life to fight for the rights of the poor and of the religious minorities of Pakistan.
Mr Bhatti said that after the many great losses and sacrifices of our people, we cannot step back. We cannot bend down before forces that terrorize and harass religious minorities in the name of religion. We will follow the footsteps of our great leader Martyr Shahbaz Bhatti and
will oppose any kind of hate, violence and intolerance in the name of religion. He said that the celebration of Minority Day provides us with an opportunity to ensure, that despite all the discrimination towards the religious minorities of Pakistan, we will remain loyal and stand as one nation united and prosperous.
Mr.Bhatti appreciated and thanked the government and people of Canada for their role as a world renowned champion of Democracy, Human Rights and Religious Freedom by establishing the Office of International Religious Freedom in order to monitor religious freedom throughout
the world, including Pakistan. He also appreciated the efforts of the present Government of Pakistan for bringing the religious minorities into mainstream society through jobs, education and representation in all political forums of the country. However the government of Pakistan must do more to protect and to uplift the religious minorities of the country. Mr. Bhatti strongly condemned the killing of the Sikh people in Wisconsin as they were worshipping in the temple. He also condemned the killing of 19 Christians in Nigeria. ICV sends their condolences to the families and friends of all the victims.Mr. Bhatti wished fellow Pakistanis a happy Independence Day for August 14, and wished our Indian brothers and sisters a happy Independence Day for August 15.

International Christian Voice Attends the Second Parliamentary Forum on Religious Freedom & Governance
On April 2nd, 2012, MP David Anderson (Cypress Hill-Grasslands) hosted the Second Parliamentary Forum on Religious Freedom and Governance. The forum was attended by a plethora of community leaders from various cultural and religious backgrounds, as well as members of parliament and others. Speakers included Robert Joustra, Cardus Editor and Researcher; Michael Van Pelt, President of Cardus; and Brian Lilley, Host of Byline on Sun News Network. The panelists for the evenings discussions were MP Scott Reid (Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington), Mario Silva (2013 Chair of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research), MP Bob Dechert (Mississauga-Erindale, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs), and Imam Mohamad Jebara (Founder of the Cordova Academy). The panelists informed the attendees on the need for religious freedom to be implemented through governance, specifically given the success of Canadian internal policies which have led to unity among people from all different cultural and religious backgrounds in Canada; as well as their own experiences and research on religious discrimination and persecution, and how restrictions on religious freedom in countries leads to the breakdown of other human rights and freedoms.
The forum’s opening remarks were made by Peter Bhatti, Chairman International Christian Voice; who detailed martyr Shahbaz Bhatti’s lifelong efforts in promoting religious freedom, a cause for which he gave his own life. Bhatti also gave examples of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan where there are extensive and fatal legal restrictions on the ability of minority religious groups to practice freely. Bhatti followed this by discussing what Canada can do to help promote religious freedom around the world; through joint ventures with like-minded countries such as the United States and Great Britain, and by holding countries with poor human rights records accountable with tougher sanctions. Bhatti also said that governments must enforce impartiality in their protection of human rights by not choosing one community religious or cultural over another. Bhatti said that religious freedom has both common and individual consequences and therefore states must protect the rights of individuals to live according to their faith while also defending the rights of their communities.
There was a strong show of support from the Pakistani Christian community at this forum; with many persons both attending and participating in the Q&A period with the panel, including members of the International Christian Voice Executive: Reuben & Eliza Charles, Vincent & Phoebe Samuel. Members of the Pakistani Christian community who attended the event are Serena Samuel, Tabassum Iqbal, Shahbaz Sindhu, Amber Obeid, Nadeem Akhtar and Raymond Dhurrani.

Commended minorities for the role they have played in prosperity, development and integrity of the country
Minorities’ vital vote in partition of Punjab contributed towards creation of Pakistan, he recalled.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Peter Bhatti hailed minorities for their role in the field of medicine. “They have always played a significant role in serving suffering humanity”, he said.
He also praised missionary educational institutions for serving the nation.
Mr. Peter Bhatti emphasized that minorities had always endeavoured for peace and harmony. He regretted that peace-loving, patriotic and innocent Pakistani Christians, who he said have never been involved in any act of terrorism or violence, become victims of menace of terrorism.
He said minorities were seen as easy and soft targets by miscreants and extremists.
Mr. Peter Bhatti went on to say: “The incident of Gojra has hampered efforts to promote interfaith harmony and national unity and has tarnished the image of the Pakistan.
“Rumors of disgracing of The Quran (Muslim holy book) have been unnecessarily blown out of proportion.
“Police investigated blasphemy accusations but up to now, they could not find any witness to alleged blasphemy.
“The crime of committing blasphemy has not been proven against a single Pakistani Christian, since this law has been introduced”.
He added: “Gojra and Korian violence is a result of criminal negligence of the police.
“Government of Punjab has failed to protect lives and properties of religious minorities of Pakistan.
The Christians of Pakistan would not have suffered deaths if local government had taken timely action.
The Chairman of the International Christian Voice appealed to all human rights organizations, political parties and to all peace loving Canadians and the international community to condemn this heinous act of violence against Christians and stand by the Christians of Pakistan in their pursuit of justice.
“We urge the international community to exercise its influence on the Pakistan government so that they can ensure lives and properties of religious minorities of Pakistan”, said Peter Bhatti.
Condemning Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws he said: “We demand that the blasphemy law and other discriminatory laws be repealed.
They (the blasphemy laws) are a tool in the hands of those who want to exploit religion to their advantage”, he said..
Mr. Peter Bhatti demanded that the culprits behind Korian and Gojra violence should be awarded exemplary punishments according to the law of the land and victims’ families be rehabilitated.
“We Pakistani Canadians demand the rights of minorities should be protected according to the vision of founding father Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and constitutional guarantees given by 1973 constitution”, he said.

A tearful Daniel Dhani Ram said he fled here from Pakistan with his two daughters after Muslim extremists abducted and tortured him for 10-hours because he refused to convert to Islam. They arrived as visitors in 2004 and filed failed refugee claims. They were here illegally for 18 months before being allowed to stay on appeal last month.
“I would rather die than go back to Pakistan,” Ram said at his lawyer’s downtown office on Thursday. “I know I will be killed and my daughters harmed if we went back.”
Ram said he was abducted by Muslim extremists in 2004 and tortured for 10 hours during which time he refused to convert to Islam. He was released after a ransom was paid.
“My father was kidnapped, tortured and beaten,” Tehseen sobbed. “They beat him all over his body for hours at a time and he was in bad shape.”
Tehseen said earlier two men tried but failed to abduct her and Sharoon as they were walking home from school.
“We both started screaming and the men ran off,” she said. “It was very painful and my sister still suffers from that.”
